AtlantisHaving Atlantis above and below the water and the brush-stroke size pointillism went well with the subject. My vision was mythical in nature. My knowledge of the fabled island is not. Atlantis was, most probably, the Minoan Empire centered in Crete which disappeared from the face of the Earth around 1500 B.C. This was due to a gigantic volcanic explosion where the crater-like island of Thera, in the Aegean Sea, lies today. That cataclysm, four times stronger than the eruption of Krakatoa, produced tidal waves that obliterated the entire Minoan civilization. By the time Plato came along to write about it a thousand years later, it had become little more than a bedtime story. |
