Stag

The white stag is a Nordic Earth Spirit which is why it is able to munch on holly berries without repercussions. The ringed moon has always been considered a magical sign, and along with the stag, was not necessarily a good omen. However, Nordic tales tend to be a bit fatalistic. I suggest you give the story of the painting whatever twist you like.
